kent state univeristy ASHTABULA MAIN HALL A-WING 2ND FLOOR RENOVATION

This project took an existing double-loaded corridor and transformed it into a dynamic space that welcomes users into the classrooms and flows into the public spaces. Striking new classrooms entrances were created to create some interest in the corridor. This renovation was focused on providing as many new classrooms and instructional spaces as possible to house the growing number of students at the regional campus. The program included in the 15,000 sf. renovation includes: 3 classrooms, fully outfitted Geology and Physics Instructional Labs, Instructional Computer Forensics Lab, Instructional Computer Lab, Student Lounge, Faculty Offices, 56 seat lecture hall. The project scope included full HVAC, fire protection, electrical and communication systems. The exterior envelope was improved through the addition of insulation and window replacements.
Inspiration for this project was found at neighboring Lake Erie. The finishes capture the colors of the sunrise and sunset on the lake and bring them into the learning environment. Payto Architects also used knowledge of the psychology of color to create classrooms which encourage learning, calming faculty offices, and welcoming student lounges which promote socialization.
