This complex, multi-phased project aims to unite the entire School of Art (currently housed in 6 buildings throughout campus) in a single Arts Complex. Based on the programming and planning study completed by Payto Architects and Ayers Saint Gross in 2009, it was deturmined that the complex would consist of renovations to the Art Annex (former Heating Plant) and Van Deusen Hall, and that the two buildings would be connected through an addition to the Art Annex. Payto Architects has worked closely with faculty and administration of the School of Art to create spaces which fulfill the needs of each program, and create opportunities for collaboration. The program for the complex has been divided into the Fire Arts (Ceramics, Sculpture, Glassblowing, Jewelry and Printmaking) and the Clean Arts (Drawing and Painting, Textiles, Art Education, Art History, Foundations and Galleries). This designation helps to cluster programs which have the most opportunities for collaboration and can share resources. The Fire Arts programs are located in the Art Annex and new connector, while the Clean Arts are located in Van Deusen. This project was completed in 2016. Phasing of construction was a complicated process to ensure that each program maintained the facilities they need while minimizing the number of times they had to move.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

This project is registered with the USGBC and is being designed to meet requirements for LEED Silver Certification.
